Anthony once asked what I was most proud of in my entire life, and without even missing a beat, I answered, “My divorce.” Even as I blurted it out, I marveled at how far I’d come, to be able to state that so authoritatively. Wherever we are in life, there are some decisions we make that are so disruptive, so humongous, they cannot be appreciated for what they are for years to come.

For those of you who listen to the #tkvpodcast of subscribe to the newsletter, you all know that I’ve recently started keeping a journal through voice note. What a revelation it has been to listen to my own voice struggle through the day, list the things that are getting me down. My immediate instinct is to treat this woman the same way I would one of you—with kindness, compassion, generosity. What is truly amazing, though, is how these feelings extend past the present, reach back in time to the woman I was a decade ago: terrified, fragile, and unsure. If only I could bring to her just a small taste of what I know now about the woman she was.
